The Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) has won this Saturday the 115th edition of the classic Milan-San Remothe first ‘monument’ of the season and which was disputed between the Italian towns of Pavia and San Remo on 288 kilometersafter winning the finish line per millimeters to the Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla).
In the first duel of the year between the two great classics enthusiasts of today, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar and the Dutch Mathieu Van de Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who was defending the title, both gave up before Philipsen’s extraordinary sprint on the Via Roma, which offered him the victory in the ‘Classicissima’.
Already in the first meters, the peloton allowed the escape of a group of almost a dozen runners, and it was not until 50 kilometers to go, near the Cipressa, when everything began to organize itself. The pace increased and the victory was limited to a group of 30 cyclistswho headed decisively towards the Poggio.
There, Pogacar managed to open a gap, but on the descent Van der Poel and the rest of the favorites managed to neutralize him. All together they headed towards San Remo, where Philipsen made use of his top speed to be crowned champion.
Australian Michael Matthews finished second and Pogacar, third, completed the podium of the day. The Dane Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and the Italian Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) completed the ‘Top 5’ and Van der Poel, defending champion, was tenth.
