Russia was accused of problems with hockey in Latvia after Dynamo Riga left the KHL
Stanley Cup winner and former coach of Dynamo Riga Sandis Ozolins blamed Russia for the decline in the level of hockey in Latvia. His words are quoted by hokej.cz.
Ozoliņš said that for 14 years, Dinamo Riga played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), but after the start of the CVO, the team announced its departure. In his opinion, this led to problems with hockey in the country.
“Where will our players improve their skills? Where can they play with quality competition? There were proposals to include the Latvian team in the second Finnish league “Mestis”. But this did not turn out to be a long-term solution,” Ozolins said.
In March 2022, Dynamo, which did not qualify for the KHL playoffs, left the tournament for political reasons. The Latvian club has played in the league since its founding in 2008.
