Russian gymnasts lost the opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games

Russian gymnasts will miss the 2024 Olympic Games. TASS reports this with reference to documents from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

The Russians lost the opportunity to qualify for the Games in Paris after missing the World Cup stage in Baku in artistic gymnastics. Athletes had a chance to receive Olympic licenses if they performed successfully at the tournament. However, none of the members of the Russian team received the neutral status necessary to participate in international competitions.

In December 2023, the senior coach of the Russian artistic gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, said that athletes would skip competitions until the FIG changed the eligibility criteria for Russians. However, in her opinion, this will not happen.

Russians and Belarusians will be able to take part in the 2024 Olympics as individual neutral athletes by decision of the International Olympic Committee. However, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will miss the tournament. In addition, there will be no representatives of team sports in Paris.
