The Lithuanian women’s national football team refused to play with Belarus in the qualification for the European Championship
The Lithuanian women’s national football team refused to play against Belarus in the qualifying tournament for the 2025 European Championship. The words of the President of the Lithuanian Football Federation Edgaras Stankevicius are quoted by RIA Novosti with reference to 15min.lt.
“As far as I know, according to the regulations, if a team refuses to play two matches, it will receive technical defeats or even disqualification for the entire cycle. We are ready to receive fines, technical defeats, zero points, but we will not play with them,” Stankevicius said, calling the team’s position a principled one.
On March 5, the draw for the qualifying stage of the 2025 European Championship took place. As a result, the Belarusian team ended up in the first group of League C with the teams of Lithuania, Cyprus and Georgia.
Russian football clubs and national teams do not take part in international tournaments by decision of the International Football Federation and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Belarusian teams continue to compete, but all home matches under the auspices of UEFA have been moved to neutral grounds.
