Kostomarov said that doctors estimated his chances of survival at 2-3 percent
Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov, who was hospitalized after complications caused by pneumonia, spoke about the forecasts doctors gave. His words are quoted by Match TV.
The ex-athlete said that the surgeon who operated on him was the first patient to survive such a situation. The specialist also noted that the chance of a favorable outcome in such cases is 2-3 percent.
“I’m glad I’m alive. But I was absolutely not happy when I first saw what had happened to me and what was left. Yes, it’s not easy for me now, but gradually I’m overcoming everything,” Kostomarov said.
In January 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left. Later, he was fitted with prosthetic legs and right arm.
