CAS reduces Simona Halep’s four-year ban to nine months
Former world number one Simona Halep successfully appealed her four-year ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This is reported on the CAS website.
According to the court, Halep was able to prove that doping entered her body through a contaminated dietary supplement. CAS decided that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional and reduced her suspension by 5.3 times to nine months.
The period of disqualification was counted from October 2022. Thus, the Romanian tennis player can return to competition.
Halep, while performing at the US Open in August 2022, gave a sample in which the banned substance roxadustat was found. The Romanian has 24 titles in Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournaments, including victories at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. At the end of 2017 and 2018, the Romanian athlete topped the WTA rankings.
