Chess player Sergei Karyakin spoke about the threats he received after the start of the SVO

Russian grandmaster Sergei Karyakin spoke about the threats he received after the start of a special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine. His words are quoted by KP.RU.

The chess player said that at the very beginning of the special operation he received threats every day. “There were direct threats to the life of me and my family. It was not very pleasant,” he emphasized.

In June 2023, Karjakin gave a master class for fighters participating in the SVO. He played several chess games in one of the advanced areas.

In March 2022, the ethics and discipline commission of the International Chess Federation disqualified Karjakin for six months. The decision was made after the grandmaster’s public speeches in support of the special operation of the Russian Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine. Later he was allowed to participate in international tournaments in a neutral status, but the chess player refused to accept this condition.
