FHR General Director Kurbatov said that in theory Russia could be expelled from the IIHF
General Director of the Russian Hockey Federation (RFH) Dmitry Kurbatov answered a question about possible expulsion from the International Hockey Federation (IIHF). His words are quoted by TASS.
Kurbatov said that in theory this could happen. “If you open the IIHF regulations, which are publicly available, it says that one of the sanctions may be a reduction in membership status and subsequent expulsion. But this does not mean that it is on the agenda and will happen tomorrow,” he said.
Kurbatov emphasized that the Russian side does not have the task of leaving the IIHF. Therefore, he added, the FHR continues to pay fees and comply with the rules of the international organization.
On February 13, the IIHF extended the suspension of the Russian and Belarus national teams for the 2024/2025 season. The reason given was current security risks.
