The bobsledder who escaped punishment for trimetazidine assessed Valieva’s case

Russian bobsledder Nadezhda Sergeeva declared Kamila Valieva’s innocence

European bobsled champion Nadezhda Sergeeva assessed the four-year disqualification of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for using trimetazidine. Her words are quoted by TASS.

The athlete expressed confidence in her compatriot’s innocence. “The conscious use of trimethadizine is absurd. But here there is a presumption of guilt. In any case, the athlete bears responsibility if a prohibited substance somehow enters his body,” Sergeeva said.

The bobsledder was caught using trimetazidine at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. The athlete escaped punishment because she proved that the substance entered her body through a contaminated drug.

On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for doping. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021. According to the court, Valieva could not prove that she took the prohibited drug trimetazidine unintentionally.
