Kelvin Kiptum, world marathon record holder, dies
The Kenyan Kelvin Kiptumworld marathon record holder, died this Sunday along with his coach, the Rwandan Gervais Hakizimanaand a woman who was traveling with them, in a traffic accident that occurred on the road that connects Eldoret with Kaptagat (Kenya), according to various media outlets in the African country.
In his short sporting career, Kiptum, 24 years old, only ran three marathons, achieving victory in each of them. He debuted in Valenciain December 2022, with the fastest time in history for a rookie in the race (2:01:53) and then, in 2023, he won first in London with 2:01:25 and on October 8 he broke the world record for the distance with 2:00:35where he became the first athlete in history to go under 2:01 (2:00:35), thus snatching the previous record from his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge.
That record was ratified by World Athletics five days before his death, on February 6.
