The National Hockey League (NHL) has partnered with the players’ trade union association to strengthen efforts to combat the coronavirus. This was reported on the league’s official website.
League officials urge players to wear masks when traveling and in all areas except training areas, ice and eating areas. Hockey players are advised to give up going to restaurants, using public transport and participating in public events. Also, all players are required to take PCR tests daily.
The measures apply to all hockey players regardless of their vaccination status. The reason for the increased restrictions was the spread of the omicron-strain of coronavirus and the increase in the number of positive tests in recent years. The extended measures will continue until at least January 7, 2022.
In early September, the organization officially announced that it would allow players to compete at the Games. Competitions will be held from 9 to 20 February.
In October, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league could ban ice hockey players from the Beijing Olympics. This is due to a possible exacerbation of the situation with the coronavirus pandemic.
