Irish basketball players refused to shake hands with Israelis before the game
The Irish women’s national basketball team refused to shake hands with members of the Israeli national team ahead of their 2025 European Championship qualifying match. BBC Sport reports this.
The meeting took place in Riga and ended with a score of 87:57 in favor of the Israelis. They were supposed to be the hosts of the meeting, but the game was moved to a neutral site.
Basketball Ireland announced in advance that their team would not participate in traditional pre-match activities. In particular, during the performance of the national anthems, the Irish women lined up not in the center of the court, but at their bench.
Earlier it was reported that 12 countries in the Middle East called on the International Football Federation (FIFA) to suspend Israel from international tournaments. It was noted that among these countries were Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
