CAS explained the mistrust of Valieva’s version about her grandfather’s pills

CAS stated that Valieva’s grandfather could not prove the purchase of trimetazidine

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the reasoning part of the decision in the case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva explained why it does not trust the athlete’s explanation of the reasons for doping in her body. The decision was published on the CAS website.

According to the athlete, she took the banned drug trimetazidine because of her grandfather, who prepared her dessert on the cutting board on which he had previously crushed his pills. However, CAS said the relative could not provide evidence of purchase of the drug: he had no bank card statements, receipts, prescriptions or witness statements.

“The only supporting evidence is two medical records dated March 2022 and December 2022, obtained after the International Skating Union (ISU) notified Valieva of an anti-doping violation on February 8, 2022. Until that time, there was no medical record,” says the reasoning part of the decision.

On January 29, CAS suspended Valieva for four years for using trimetazidine. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021.
