American billionaire Peter Thiel will finance the “Olympics on steroids”

American billionaire and co-founder of PayPal Peter Thiel decided to hold the “Olympics on steroids” (Enhanced Games). The New York Post reports this.

Thiel will finance a tournament in which athletes will be allowed to use any substance to improve their performance. It is expected that the competition will include five sports – swimming, gymnastics, weightlifting, athletics and martial arts.

Dr Aron D’Souza, who studies drug-induced human enhancement, said 900 athletes had expressed interest in participating in the tournament. “People should be able to make choices about their bodies, and no one – be it a sports federation or a government – should tell them what to do with it,” he said. The specialist added that the competition will help scientific research on life expectancy and healthy aging.

In addition, the tournament will help draw attention to the problem of exploitation of the Olympic infrastructure. According to D’Souza, most of the sports facilities built for the Games are not used after they are completed, so the “Olympics on steroids” will be held once a year at existing sites.
