Rodnina: we had to think in advance how to protect figure skater Kamila Valieva in CAS
Three-time Olympic champion and now State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina spoke out about the disqualification of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for doping. Her comment is quoted by Match TV.
“To avoid being offended now because of such a verdict, we should have thought in advance about how to help her, and not publish afterwords,” Rodnina said. She noted that the law on combating doping in sports states that the coach, doctor and parents are responsible for the entry of doping into the body of a minor athlete.
Earlier, coach Eteri Tutberidze reproached the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for not establishing exactly how the prohibited substance entered Valieva’s body. In addition, the specialist expressed doubts that someone defended the skater at the hearings and called the court’s verdict the worst.
On January 29, CAS suspended Valieva for four years for using the banned drug trimetazidine. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021. The athlete, along with her partners on the Russian national team, was deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympics. The International Skating Union awarded bronze medals to other members of the Russian team.
