The Seimas of Latvia banned national teams from playing against teams from Russia and Belarus
Latvian team sports teams were banned from competing with teams from Russia and Belarus. This was reported on the website of the Seimas of Latvia.
The amendments to the Sports Law adopted by the Sejm mean that the ban will also apply if Russians and Belarusians perform under a neutral flag. Also, Latvia will not be able to organize competitions of adult and youth teams in team sports, to which teams from Russia and Belarus will be allowed in any status.
Earlier, the Latvian Seimas appealed to French President Emmanuel Macron and demanded that Russians not be allowed to attend the 2024 Olympic Games. It was noted that some Latvian athletes are ready to boycott competitions in Paris if neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus participate in it.
On December 8, the International Olympic Committee allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the Games. Representatives of team sports will also miss the tournament.
