FIFA President cites Super Bowl to defend World Cup every two years

Recently, FIFA has shown interest in holding the world Cup every two years. To defend the new measure, Gianni Infantino, president of the federation, compared the World Cup with other competitions such as the Super Bowl, an annual event that marks the final of American football.

“An event’s reputation depends on its quality, not its frequency. Every year you have a Super Bowl, Wimbledon or the Champions League, and everyone is excited and waiting, why not have a World Cup every two years?” he told media in Israel.

“Many critics say it would be harmful, but FIFA studies say it would not diminish the tournament’s magic because its attendance would not affect its quality and reputation. We’ve already decided that there will be a 48-team World Cup starting in 2026. If it’s a two- or four-year tournament, it’s still in the consultation phase. Precisely because it is a magical tournament, it would have to be held more often”, he added.

The possibility of a biennial World Cup has generated diverse opinions in the football world. For Didier Deschamps, France coach, the change would “banalize” the competition.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in an interview with Sky Sports, also criticized the idea and came out in defense of the athletes: “When are we going to rest? Never! We are not robots. There are more and more games and less rest for the players and nobody cares about us”.

However, the measure generated support from important characters in the world of the ball, in the case of the former player Ronaldo Nazário and the technician Pep Guardiola.
