USADA head Tigert was outraged by the award of team bronze at the 2022 Olympic Games to Russia
The head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Travis Tigert, was outraged by the decision of the International Skating Union (ISU) to award bronze in the team tournament at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing to Russian figure skaters. His words are quoted by USA Today.
In his opinion, disciplinary rules should have been applied in this situation. “It’s nonsense when Valieva gets four years, and Russia retains Olympic bronze. A fair and honest result is a bronze medal for Team Canada,” said Tigert.
On January 30, the ISU redistributed the medals of the Olympic team tournament due to the disqualification and cancellation of the results of Russian Kamila Valieva. The Russian team moved from first to third place, gold went to the USA, silver to Japan. If the Russian team had been disqualified, Canada would have won the bronze.
On January 29, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for using the banned drug trimetazidine. The period of suspension starts on December 25, 2021.
