Russia will not be deprived of Olympic gold because of figure skater Valieva until the ISU decision
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced who will decide the fate of the team figure skating tournament medals at the 2022 Olympic Games (OG) in Beijing after the disqualification of Russian Kamila Valieva. The solution is available on the organization’s website.
CAS said responsibility should fall on the International Skating Union (ISU). According to Channel One, a meeting of the ISU Council, at which a decision will be made on the results of the Olympic team figure skating tournament in Beijing, will be held on February 7.
CAS emphasized that the consequences associated with the retroactive disqualification of Valieva from past competitions are not within the scope of their arbitration procedure.
Earlier on January 29, CAS disqualified Valieva for four years. The period is calculated from December 25, 2021. Thus, the athlete will be deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing as part of the Russian team.
At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Valieva won gold in the team tournament, but the winners – the teams of Russia, the USA and Japan – were not awarded due to the doping scandal involving her. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
