Former commander-in-chief of European NATO forces James Stavridis said that the November presidential elections in the United States could become the starting point for the start of peace negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, Newsmax reports. According to Stavridis, by the end of this year it will become clear whether new opportunities will arise for Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky to start a dialogue.
Stavridis emphasized that there is a possibility of ending the conflict similar to the Korean War (1950-1953). According to the former NATO commander-in-chief, Russia will continue to control Crimea and will also maintain land links with the peninsula through a bridge. In addition, the Russian presence will remain in some parts of Ukraine, the admiral is sure. However, this will not prevent Kyiv from becoming part of NATO in the near future, Stavridis concluded.
Previously, the former commander-in-chief stated that the war in Korea could be a good example for Russia and Ukraine towards ending the conflict. Stavridis compared South Korea of the last century with the Ukrainian state. According to the admiral, the South Korean army, like the Ukrainian Armed Forces, did not have sufficient forces to win, so the Korean conflict was frozen. During the long pause, the West helped Seoul embark on a path of economic growth and become stronger militarily. At the same time, Stavridis emphasized the need for Ukraine to join NATO. According to the former commander-in-chief, this step will give Ukrainians “iron guarantees” of security.
Let us recall that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly spoken about his readiness for peace negotiations with Ukraine. The Kremlin accuses Vladimir Zelensky of unwillingness to engage in dialogue with Moscow.
