CAS: figure skater Valieva could not prove that she did not take doping intentionally
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has explained the disqualification of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. The solution is available on the organization’s website.
CAS said it carefully considered all the evidence presented. In their opinion, Valieva could not prove that she did not take doping intentionally. The decision of the CAS panel is final and binding, except for the right of the parties to appeal to the Swiss Federal Court within 30 days on limited grounds.
Earlier on January 29, CAS disqualified Valieva for four years. The period is calculated from December 25, 2021. Thus, the athlete will be deprived of gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing as part of the Russian team.
At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Valieva won gold in the team tournament, but the winners – the teams of Russia, the USA and Japan – were not awarded due to the doping scandal involving her. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
