Spartak fans criticized 40-year-old Kovalchuk for returning to the club
Spartak fans criticized hockey player Ilya Kovalchuk for returning to the club. The statement from the Ultra Spartak fan association is posted on Telegram.
Fans compared 40-year-old Kovalchuk to a prodigal son, who turned out to be of no use to anyone and therefore returned to his native team. “We don’t see any benefit in Kovalchuk coming to our club. Quite the contrary. Moreover, we believe that his actions said everything for him,” they noted.
The fans were outraged by the fact that the hockey player could have returned to Spartak several times in his career, but made a choice in favor of other clubs. At the same time, they emphasized that they did not want to belittle Kovalchuk’s merits.
Kovalchuk’s return to Spartak was announced on December 5, 2023. The striker signed a contract with the club until the end of the season. In seven matches of the regular season of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), the red-and-white graduate scored three goals and made one assist.
