Irina Rodnina said that in Russia figure skaters are loved more than football players
Three-time Olympic champion and now State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina compared the love for figure skaters and football players in Russia. She is quoted by Sport24.
According to Rodnina, figure skaters are very popular and are of great importance for the country. “Of course, a person must prove his greatness through work, go out on the ice and show the best result. What do football players do? They don’t like football players [так]like skaters now,” she said.
Earlier, Honored Coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova called figure skating, not football, the number one sport in Russia. “Is football the main sport in our country? Why on earth? We don’t have it in our country,” she noted.
Russian figure skaters and football players do not take part in international tournaments due to sanctions from the International Olympic Committee and sports federations.
