Referee Khalil Umut Meler, beaten in the Turkish championship match, returned to work
Turkish football referee Halil Umut Meler, who was beaten in a national championship match in December, has returned to work. This was reported by Fanatik.
The referee was the chief referee of the match of the 20th round of the Turkish championship between Istanbulspor and Konyaspor. Before the start of the meeting, Mehler spoke with fans and players, and Istanbulspor President Ekmel Faik Saryalioglu presented flowers to the referee.
On December 12, Mehler announced that he would end his refereeing career. “This job is over for me. I can’t continue anymore,” the referee said.
On December 11, at the end of the game against Rizespor, Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca ran onto the field and punched Mehler in the face. The referee fell on the lawn and received several more blows from people who ran up. After this he was hospitalized.
