The 66th edition of the South American Championship of the International Lightning Class takes place in the waters of the Ecuadorian coast.

There are 24 sailboats competing for Colombia (6), Peru (3), Chile (3), Argentina (1), the United States (1) and the host, Ecuador (10).

The tricolor ships are Black Beauty, led by Juan Santos; Dos Hermanos, by Sebastián Herrera; Dream it, do it, by Alemán López; El Bello, by Rafael Quintero; Marraqueta, by Jonathan Martinetti; Mazamorra, by Ernesto Sarrazín; Old Green, by Justus Klemperer; and Ecuador, the winning team of the previous edition of this competition, led by Julio Vélez.

The lightning category is an international class of sailing vessel designed by the American Olin Stephens in 1938. This class of sailboats is recognized by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

On Saturday 18 will be the awarding of the winner at the Salinas Yacht Club in Salinas, in the province of Santa Elena. This tourist attraction was chosen by the Confederation for the infrastructure and facilities provided by the Yacht Club, of great prestige in international sporting events. (D)
