Vladimir Plyushchev called safety the main reason for refusing to go to the Olympics
Former head coach of the Russian national hockey team Vladimir Plyushchev named the main reason why it is better for the country’s representatives to refuse a trip to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. “Championship” reports this.
“Not for political reasons, but for security reasons. What can happen there will make the Munich Olympics seem like a fun step,” Plyushchev noted.
At the 1972 Munich Games, eight members of the Palestinian terrorist organization Black September infiltrated the Olympic Village and took Israeli athletes hostage. The attackers demanded the release of more than 200 Palestinians held by Israel and two German left-wing extremists in West German prisons. In total, 17 people became victims of the attack, including 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team.
On December 8, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Games in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition.
