Immunologist Kryuchkov: the cause of death of athlete Sereda needs to be carefully studied
The likelihood of developing complications of influenza A for young people is very small, so the cause of death of 20-year-old speed skater Anastasia Sereda needs to be studied very carefully, says Nikolai Kryuchkov, general director of the drug registration and research company Clinical Excellence Group, candidate of medical sciences, immunologist. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he spoke about the features of influenza A.
“This disease poses the greatest danger to children under three years of age, the elderly, people with chronic diseases and pregnant women,” Kryuchkov said.
The risks of complications for teenagers, young adults, and even middle-aged people without specific underlying risk factors are very low. This is a case that needs to be studied especially carefully because it is not very typical for influenza

According to the immunologist, the detection of type A influenza in the athlete’s body does not exclude the possibility that she could have been infected with another, more serious infection, which caused complications.
“In addition, influenza A itself can be replaced over time by a secondary bacterial infection, which can significantly contribute to a worsening prognosis. In addition, there may be effects on the cardiovascular system, which also increases risks. It is also possible to develop pneumonia,” he concluded.
On the night of January 7, Russian speed skater Anastasia Sereda died at the age of 20. She was called one of the most promising young athletes in Russian short track speed skating. Representative of the St. Petersburg Skating Federation Nikolai Tretyakov said that the preliminary cause of death was influenza A, which caused complications on the brain. According to Tretyakov, the athlete was in a coma for almost a month.
