Canadian figure skater Sorensen was accused of rape 11 years ago

Canadian figure skater Nikolai Sorensen was accused of rape in April 2012. USA Today reports this.

The victim was a 22-year-old figure skater who now works as a coach in the USA. The woman, who has not been named, made the case public after Sorensen spoke in an interview about the safety of figure skaters in ice dancing.

“I couldn’t believe the words coming out of the rapist’s mouth. At that moment, it dawned on me that mothers would most likely send their daughters to train with him after he retired from sports, and I could not live with the guilt of knowing that I had never spoken about it,” the alleged victim said .

According to the source, the woman remained silent for many years and never contacted the police or sports officials because she was afraid that she would be accused of libel and no one would believe her.

Sorensen played for Denmark at the beginning of his career, and began representing Canada in the 2018/19 season. Together with Laurence Fournier-Baudry, they became Canadian champions last season, and took fifth place at last year’s World Championships.
