Forward of the National Hockey League (NHL) club Washington Capitals and the Russian national team Yevgeny Kuznetsov will miss the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. RIA Novosti was confirmed by the President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Luc Tardiff.
He stated that he could not change the hockey rules for the sake of one person. “I will not change the decision on Kuznetsov, I am sorry, but this will not change,” the head of the IIHF stressed.
In 2019, Kuznetsov was caught using illegal substances and suspended by IIHF from competing in international competitions for four years. Cocaine was found in the athlete’s doping sample taken in May 2019 during the World Championships in Slovakia. The hockey player accepted the disqualification and was deprived of the bronze medal of the 2019 World Cup. At the same time, he has the right to play in the NHL, since the American league does not obey international rules.
The Olympic Games will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022.
