Russian chess players were punished for an arranged draw at the World Championship

Chess players Dubov and Nepomniachtchi were awarded zero points each for a fixed draw

Russian chess players Daniil Dubov and Ian Nepomniachtchi were punished for an arranged draw at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship (WCH), held in Samarkand. This is reported in Twitter International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The tournament’s chief referee awarded the athletes zero points. The reason was that they made several moves with only the knight and agreed to a draw on the 12th move of the meeting.

The Russian Chess Federation (RFC) stated that the Russian grandmasters did not agree with the decision of the chief arbiter. They have filed an appeal and are awaiting the result.

After the first day of play, Dubov and Nepomniachtchi were in the leading group at the World Championships, having scored nine points each. The remaining nine rounds of the tournament are scheduled to take place later on December 30th.

The World Rapid and Blitz Championship is taking place in Samarkand from December 26 to 30. The total prize fund of the tournament is $600 thousand.
