Eight-year-old Russian Shogjiev defeated 28-year-old chess player Vakhidov at the World Championship

Eight-year-old chess player from Russia Roman Shogjiev defeated grandmaster from Uzbekistan Jakhongir Vakhidov in the first round of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship (WCH) held in Samarkand. This was reported by a Lenta.ru correspondent.

The Russian played with black pieces, the game ended on the 46th move. In another match of the tournament, Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi, playing with white, ended a draw against 15-year-old chess player from Kazakhstan Ernur Amangelda.

Shogjiev won the world championship among chess players under the age of eight in October this year. 28-year-old Vakhidov is the champion of the World Chess Olympiad.

The World Rapid and Blitz Championship is taking place in Samarkand from December 26 to 30. The total prize fund of the tournament is $600 thousand.

In November, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) extended permission for Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete under the organization’s flag. It applies to those who already act in a neutral status and will last until January 1, 2025.
