Melnikova: I doubt that every athlete has the right to make a decision on Olympic Games
Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Angelina Melnikova assessed her chances of going to the 2024 Games. Her words are quoted by Sport24.
Melnikova said that she dreams of going to the Olympic Games in Paris. “Whether we go there or not is decided by our federation. I doubt that every athlete has the right to choose. The Federation will take into account all the criteria set by the International Olympic Committee. Next, there will probably be a collective decision,” she noted.
On December 10, the head coach of the Russian artistic gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, said that athletes would miss competitions until the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) changes the admission criteria for Russians. However, in her opinion, this will not happen.
On December 8, the IOC announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. Six Russians and five Belarusians have currently qualified for the Games.
