Tarasova called figure skating, not football, the number one sport in Russia
Honored coach of the USSR in figure skating Tatyana Tarasova called the sport number one in Russia. Her words are quoted by Metaratings.
Between football and figure skating, Tarasova chose the latter. “Is football the main sport in our country? Why on earth? Yes, it is shown most on television and, in principle, broadcast, because people love football, it is a global discipline. But we don’t have it in our country. That’s why people love what we don’t have,” she explained.
Earlier, three-time Olympic figure skating champion Irina Rodnina also refused to consider football the main sport in Russia. “The popularity of football in the country is exaggerated. Every major start we make sure that our players are nothing of themselves,” Rodnina said.
Russian figure skaters and football players do not take part in international tournaments due to sanctions from the International Olympic Committee and sports federations.
