Biathlete Laegreid suspended from World Cup race for shooting in hotel
Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid was suspended from the mass start at the World Cup in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. NRK reports this.
The reason was that the athlete made an involuntary shot in the hotel. He said that he was doing blank training and did not know that the clip was loaded. The athlete took aim at a pouf against the wall and punched a hole in it. After this, the International Biathlon Union (IBU) banned the Norwegian from running the race due to a violation of safety rules.
The biathlete apologized for the incident and stated that he should have been more attentive to safety rules. “We are involved in a sport that has the potential to take lives. It’s very difficult for me now,” he said.
Laegreid is an Olympic champion in the men’s relay at the 2022 Games. He is also a five-time world champion and winner of the Small Crystal Globe. The Norwegian has a large number of victories at the World Cup stages.
