Ankaragucu President Koca faces up to nine years in prison for beating a judge
Ankaragucu President Faruk Koca faces imprisonment for beating up referee Halil Umut Meler after the match against Rizespor (1:1) in the 15th round of the Turkish Super League. Hurriyet became aware of this.
According to the Turkish Criminal Code, the functionary and three other participants in the attack could be sentenced to prison for up to 4.5 years. However, the punishment could be doubled to nine years under a provision included in the law on the prevention of violence and abuse in sports.
On December 12, the Turkish Football Federation suspended the national championship due to the incident. Koca apologized to the entire community of Turkish referees, football players and the people of Turkey, after which he resigned.
At the end of the game, Koca ran onto the field and punched Mehler in the face. The referee fell on the lawn and received several more blows from people who ran up. He was hospitalized. Later he decided to end his career.
