The election is made by the Association of Sports Journalists, who recalled that the runner is the first Slovenian to win an Olympic medal in cycling.
The cyclist Tadej Pogacar, 23, winner of two consecutive Tour de France titles, was chosen Best Athlete of the Year in Slovenia, ahead of the also cyclist Primoz Roglic and the NBA basketball player Luka Doncic.
The athlete of the year in the Alpine country is chosen by the Association of Sports Journalists, who recalled that Pogacar is also the first Slovenian to win an Olympic medal in cycling.
“Without a doubt, he is currently the best cyclist in the world”, Highlighted the jury.
Pogacar received 262 points, ahead of Roglic (218), winner of the award the previous two years, and Doncic (97).
Last July he opened a golden page in the history of the Tour of Francia by winning the second consecutive title, an achievement that at his age -21 and 22 when he won- they could not get legends such as Eddy Merckx y Bernard Hinault.
Pogacar is considered in his native Slovenia a symbol of healthy life, dedication to sport and an unwavering mental attitude, based on humility and work. (D)
