Figure skater Nikita Volodin competing for Germany: nice attention from Russia
Figure skater Nikita Volodin, who left Russia, appreciated his victory in the Grand Prix final in Beijing under the German flag in a duet with Minerva Fabien. His words are quoted by Fontanka.
The athlete said that winning the tournament did not make him more popular in Russia. “Of course, I was pleased that my homeland again showed attention to me, because I am still a Russian person. My home school, which raised me, also made a post that they were proud. So there is still support,” he said.
Volodin was born in 1999 in St. Petersburg. Until 2022, he competed in pair skating for Russia at international tournaments. This season, the athlete was invited to Germany to pair with Haza. On December 8, they won the Grand Prix final, scoring 206.43 points for two programs.
On March 1, 2022, the International Skating Union banned Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Due to sanctions, skaters were unable to take part in the World and European Championships, as well as in other international tournaments.
