Turkish President Erdogan called referee Meler, who was beaten at the national championship
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called football referee Halil Umut Meler, who was beaten in a national championship match. About this on social networks X (formerly Twitter) said Turkish Interior Minister Ali Erlikaya.
The head of state wished the victim a speedy recovery. “Once again, I express my best wishes to our judge, his precious family and the Turkish judicial community,” Yerlikaya wrote.
Earlier, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended the national championship due to the incident. It happened in the match of the 15th round of the Super League between Ankaragucu and Rizespor (1:1).
At the end of the game, Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca ran onto the field and hit Mehler in the face. The referee fell on the lawn and received several more blows from people who ran up. After this, he was hospitalized and the attackers were arrested.
