With one gesture, the coach who unleashed an international scandal will leave the Russian national team

Italian Sergio Buzato will leave the post of head coach of the Russian women’s volleyball team. This was reported by Match TV.

According to the source, instead of Buzato, the national team will be headed by another Italian – Stefano Lavarini. The latter coached the South Korean national team, which finished fourth at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Sergio Buzato hosted the Russian national team in November 2019. Under his leadership, the Russians lost to the Brazilians in the quarterfinals of the Games in Tokyo. At the 2021 European Championship, the Russian team was also left without medals.

In August 2019, at the qualifying tournament for the Olympics, Buzato, who was part of the national team’s coaching staff, after defeating the South Korean team, depicted narrow eyes, which unleashed an international scandal. The South Korean federation called the gesture racist and wrote a complaint to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). Busato was suspended for three matches. He apologized to his rival.
