Figure skater Roman Kostomarov compared his illness and its consequences to the end of the world

Olympic champion in ice dancing Roman Kostomarov described his illness and its consequences in one phrase. His words are quoted by TASS.

Kostomarov compared what happened to him to the end of the world. The skater noted that when he was in a coma, his family and friends were most worried.

Kostomarov said that the need for amputation was a terrible blow for him. “I’m an athlete and I didn’t understand how I would live if I lost everything – not just my legs and part of my arms,” he shared, adding that his wife’s support helped him.

Earlier, Kostomarov admitted that he did not want to live in the first months after hospitalization. He also suggested that sports training helped him cope with the disease.

Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left.

Later, he was fitted with prosthetic legs and right arm. Kostomarov continues to actively train – he works out in the gym and swimming pool, plays tennis – and hopes to go on the ice on skates.
