The State Duma spoke about the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games

Deputy Zhurova: the IOC’s decision on the admission of Russians to Olympic Games-24 will depend on the SVO

The decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games will depend on the events that will take place in the special military operation (SVO) zone. This is how, in a conversation with Lenta.ru, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating, Svetlana Zhurova, responded to the deadline announced by the IOC for making a decision on this issue.

“NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and other Western participants are already talking about ambiguity. Therefore, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, understands that as soon as a peace agreement is signed, the Russians will return [к участию в международных соревнованиях] with flag and anthem. He is waiting for this signal,” Zhurova said.

According to the parliamentarian, the head of the IOC is putting the decision on the admission of Russians on pause.

“Because then to apologize and allow it to happen would be indecent towards Russia,” she concluded.

Earlier, Thomas Bach said that the issue of admitting Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games will be included in the agenda of the Olympic summit, which will be held on December 5 in Lausanne, Switzerland. He added that the IOC executive committee will make a decision at a meeting in March.

On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. However, athletes associated with the armed forces or security forces of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.

The Olympic Games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
