Athlete Oscar Pistorius convicted of murder will be released on parole
Amputee track and field athlete Oscar Pistorius, convicted of murder, has been granted parole, the BBC reports.
Hearings in the athlete’s case took place in Atteringville prison, which is located near Pretoria (South Africa). The 37-year-old South African athlete is due to be released on January 5 next year.
Pistorius was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. On the night of February 14, 2013, he shot her through the bathroom door. According to the athlete, he mistook his girlfriend for a robber.
Initially, he was found guilty of causing death by negligence, sentenced to five years in prison, then released early and transferred to house arrest. Later, the sentence was toughened – the murder was considered deliberate, the athlete was returned to jail and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Pistorius is a six-time Paralympic champion. He was also a World Championships silver medalist in the 4x400m relay and competed at the 2012 London Olympics.
