The Champions League round of 16 clashes, known this Monday morning, were canceled by UEFA. Due to an error in the draw recognized by UEFA, the procedure will be repeated.
During the draw, Manchester United’s ball was placed in the pots and the team was drawn as an opponent of Villarreal, but the rule imposes that two teams from the same group in the first phase cannot duel with each other.
If that mistake wasn’t bad enough, the event led by Giorgio Marchetti (UEFA general secretary), Michael Heselschwerdt (UEFA head of competition) and Andriy Arshavin (ex-player) made another mistake.
United’s ball was not replaced in the pots and caused confusion in the rest of the draw, putting Bayern Munich as opponents of Atlético Madrid. The Spanish team went to social media and asked for explanations of the flaws.
Soon after, Uefa spoke on Twitter. “Faced with a technical problem with the software from an external service provider that indicates to the referees which teams are eligible to play against each other, there was a material error in the draw for the round of 16 of the Uefa Champions League”, informed the entity.
The new draw is scheduled to take place at 11 am (GMT).
Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
