The striker of Inter Miami, Leonardo Campana, is ready to return to the Ecuadorian national team, after ‘La Tricolor’ announced that the striker has been invited by coach Félix Sánchez Bas.
Campana, who was initially not considered by the coach, was eventually included because of the possibility that Enner Valencia could not travel due to the injury he suffered with his team, Inter de Porto Alegre, in the match they had against Palmeiras, of the Brazilian league.
“The Ecuadorian Football Federation announces that by decision of the technical team led by Félix Sánchez Basa, the player Leonardo Campana will join the La Tri team for the FIFA date in November,” the statement read.
Campana scored 9 goals during the MLS regular season, along with two more goals in the United States Open Cup, both in the semifinal game against FC Cincinnati.
Campana has scored 23 goals since joining Inter Miami, just six goals shy of the all-time top scorer, which still belongs to Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 29 goals during his time in Florida.
Another chance for Campana
After not being considered for the competition in FIFA’s September and October dates, the former Wolverhampton England striker, who today shares a team with Argentina star Lionel Messi, is looking to take revenge on the national team.
The last match that Campana played in the colors of his team was on June 18, 2023 when they played a friendly match against Bolivia in which they won by a minimal margin.
Despite being a figurehead for the South American under-20 team heading to the 2019 World Cup in Poland, scoring six goals, he has yet to score his first goal with his country’s senior team. (D)
