Eight-time world champion Andrei Lamov will play for the Swedish national team
Eight-time world champion in ski orienteering Andrei Lamov changed the Russian flag to a Swedish one. Vice-President of the Russian Orienteering Federation Viktor Elizarov reported this to TASS.
“We have information that Andrei Lamov will now play for Sweden. Everything was leading up to this, the athlete has lived in this country for many years, his wife is Swedish,” Elizarov said. He noted that Lamov’s change of citizenship is a loss for the Russian team, since the athlete was one of its leaders, but stressed that the team will cope without him.
“We understood for a long time that this would all end. The Russian Orienteering Federation will not interfere with Lamov’s performance under the Swedish flag,” added Elizarov.
37-year-old Lamov has eight gold and four silver medals at world championships. He is also a two-time European champion.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions. The decision on the admission of countries to the 2024 Olympics has not yet been made.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended Russians and Belarusians from tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. After this, a number of federations turned to CAS.
