Tom Aspinall says he is dedicating the UFC interim championship belt to his father.
British fighter Tom Aspinall commented on his victory over Russian heavyweight Sergei Pavlovich in the title match of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His words are quoted by the promotion’s YouTube channel.
“Remember, if you have the opportunity to do something, be sure to take that chance. Sergei is a big and very scary guy. But I always believed and continue to believe in myself,” Aspinall said. He added that he dedicates this belt to his father.
The fight, in which the organization’s interim heavyweight champion belt was at stake, took place as part of the UFC 295 tournament, held in New York (USA), and lasted just over a minute. Aspinall knocked out Pavlovich in the second minute of the first round.
The defeat was the second in Pavlovich’s career. Before that, in the UFC he lost to the Dutchman Alistair Overeem. The Russian fighter has 18 victories; before the fight with Aspinall, he won six fights in a row. The Briton won for the 14th time in professional MMA with three defeats.
