The International Sambo Federation allowed Ukrainians not to shake hands with Russians at the World Championships
Ukrainian sambists were allowed not to shake hands with Russians at the 2023 World Championships. TASS reports this.
“The International Sambo Federation (FIAS) allowed participants of the World Championships in Yerevan to refuse the traditional handshake at the end of bouts,” the agency’s interlocutor said. This decision also applies to fights with representatives of the Belarusian national team. It is noted that the refusal was initiated by the Ukrainian side.
The 2023 World Sambo Championships are taking place in Yerevan (Armenia) from November 10 to 12. Russian and Belarusian athletes take part in the tournament in a neutral status.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions. The decision on countries’ admission to the 2024 Olympics has not yet been made.
