Deputy Zhurova spoke about the political background in the case of figure skater Valieva
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova commented on the doping case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Zhurova considered that there was a political motive in the situation with Valieva. “The fact is that cases like Camila’s almost never came to trial. This was all decided at the level of anti-doping committees of international federations. But since the scandal occurred at the Olympics, they brought it to the level of propaganda,” said the deputy. According to Zhurova, if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is clearly consistent, then Valieva’s case should end positively.
Earlier, three-time Olympic champion and State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina spoke out about Valieva’s doping case. “We should have learned to lie better about Valieva. Who will believe the fairy tale that she accidentally drank the wrong glass?” – she said.
At the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, Valieva won gold in the team competition, but the Russian team was not awarded due to a doping scandal involving her. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. At the same time, CAS allowed her to participate in the individual tournament, where she took fourth place.
