Ariel Helwani: UFC wants to hold a rematch between Makhachev and Oliveira on January 20
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) wanted to hold a rematch between Russian Islam Makhachev and Brazilian Charles Oliveira in 2024. Journalist Ariel Helwani reported this on social media. X (former name of Twitter).
It is noted that the fight is currently in development. It is scheduled to take place on January 20 at UFC 297 in Toronto (Canada). A fight between Australian Alexander Volkanovski and Spaniard Ilia Topuria has been scheduled for this evening, but it could be postponed to February.
On October 21, Makhachev defeated Volkanovski at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi. The Russian athlete, considered the favorite, knocked out his opponent in the first round and defended his lightweight title for the second time. That evening he was supposed to fight with Oliveira, but ten days before the meeting, the Brazilian withdrew due to injury.
In total, the 31-year-old Russian had 26 fights in his career, in which he won 25 victories, losing only once. Oliveira has 31 wins and nine losses. Another fight with his participation was declared invalid.
