The German national team included 51-year-old speed skater Pechstein in the World Cup squad
The German national team included 51-year-old Claudia Pechstein in the squad for the upcoming World Cup stages. This was reported on the Facebook account of the German Skating and Short Track Association (banned in Russia; belongs to the Meta corporation, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
The athlete is entered at a distance of 5000 meters. The first stage of the World Cup will take place from November 10 to 12 in Obihiro, Japan.
Pechstein performed at seven Olympic Games, her first Games being held in 1992 in Albertville. The German woman has five gold, two bronze and two silver Olympic medals. She is also a world champion in the classical all-around and a five-time world champion in individual distances. In 2023, the speed skater took tenth place at the world championship in the 5000-meter race.
Pechstein was suspended by the International Skating Union (ISU) for two years, starting in February 2009. The German woman’s doping tests never gave a positive result, but the ISU considered the excess of a number of indicators in the athlete’s blood to be sufficient evidence of doping. After serving her suspension, she resumed her career.
